Willie Fahey led the A walk in the Knockmealdowns commencing at the Glentaunatnath Bridge on the road to Mount Melleray from Newcastle. The group walked to the summit on Knocknafallia wearing their winter warmers in cold cloudy conditions. Patches of snow still lingered in places. Then on to Knocknagnauv and eastwards to its base for lunch in forest shelter. The clouds lifted to reveal stunning ultra bright views of the lowlands. Homeward bound the group took in Knockmeal en route.

Bridget Browne led the B walk with group of 19 setting out from King’s Yard and headed up the forest track to Monabrack, a very steep climb which on a clear day gives great views of Galtee Mor. In poor visibility and lots of wind as group headed towards the snow covered Bengower. They were battered by high winds while they climbed and were glad of the shelter afforded by the Galtee wall where they had lunch. From there they hand railed along the wall with almost zero visibility and then descended into the Glounreagh valley and back down to King’s Yard.

Next Sunday 24 Nov, A & C walks will leave from opposite the fire station in Cashel at 10am.

Walking is a great way to get fit as well as being a great way to meet new friends and see new places. Give it a go as new walkers are welcome to come along, so, for a healthy, sociable and enjoyable activity, feel free to join us in Cashel at 10am. With the winter upon us and the ever changing weather on the hills, the club recommends walkers to come prepared by bringing the correct clothing/gear for the walks on a Sunday. The following is a minimum list of essentials to have with you on a days Hill Walk: Hiking Boots with good grip, Waterproof Jacket & Leggings, Warm Clothing,
Hat & Gloves and spares, torch, food & water, walking poles, whistle and charged mobile phone. A change of clothes and particularly footwear for after the walk is also strongly advised. There’s a choice of walks each Sunday, so there’s something to suit everyone.
