Friday evening walks.
Friday 19 July 2019 the forecast was for very heavy showers as the group met at the village green to complete part of the Leafy Loop walk. The group of 32 set out along the streets of Durrow which is preparing for the Scarecrow Festival. The route along the country road was up Ballagh Hill before swinging right and heading onto woodland path. This trail leads to Cullahill Castle. Reaching the busy R639. Crossing with care, it’s into Durrow Demesne at a gate lodge. Locally, it is referred to as Bishop’s Wood because in penal times a Catholic bishop was executed by a tree that survives in the forest. Woodland paths lead along to the banks of the Erkina River. The group walking along the riverbank pass the metal bridge, noting to the group on next outing to Durrow the group will cross that bridge in 2 weeks time when we return to complete second loop and view Scarecrows as part of the festival which is from 28 July to 5 August celebrating its 10th anniversary. Highly recommend people to head to Durrow to view these creative scarecrows. Crossing the stile the group enter the grounds of Castle Durrow and exiting by its tree-lined avenue. In very humid walking conditions the group enjoyed their walk as they chatted, traveling along the forest tracks and trails without a drop of rain. After a lovely walk 27 of the group went to Dec’s Bar for refreshments. Thanks everyone for coming out and making it an enjoyable evening.
We have only 6 walks left this summer, so come out and join us.
Next Friday July 26 we are heading to Silvermines to complete a new route for our Friday evening walk. Please wear sturdy walking boots for this walk and some people might like to bring their walking poles.

Friday evening walks are low level walks, of 2 – 3 hrs duration, mostly on forest track. If you want to get out and about in the countryside, meet new people, and make new friends, just come along. We explore paths and trails off the beaten track and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday. We offer an easy introduction to off-road walking for anybody considering taking it up. All we ask is that you come prepared with sturdy footwear, rain jacket, drink and snack. Everyone welcome, old friends and plenty of room for newcomers. The walks are very sociable and usually we end our Friday evening walk by heading for a cup of tea and sandwich. We meet every Friday evening at Slievenamon Road car park in Thurles at 6.20pm and leave at 6.30pm sharp.
