3 Feb 2019

Sunday 3rd Feb 2019 Willie Fahey led the A walk in the west Knockmealdowns. The day had an eventful start with their cars failing in the ice to get to their intended destination. Luckily one of the group helped out with his four-wheel drive. It turned out to be a beautiful day for walking, fresh with a little wind and no rain. It was a wonderful winter day and a dream for hill walkers. Trudging along in the snow is different to normal days out and is good fun. Eleven walkers enjoyed the day out.

John G O’Dwyer lead the C walk on the theme of General Liam Lynch. In the War of Independence, Lynch was commander of the 1st Southern Division IRA, a position he held until the July 1921 Truce. During the Civil War, he became Chief of Staff of the IRA. until he was shot by Free State soldiers in the Knockmealdown Mountains. The 12 km walk, which was entirely on tracks traced Liam Lynch’s footsteps on the April 10, 1923. The walk led to the monument marking the place where IRA chief of Staff, Lynch was shot by a bullet fired from distance. A most informative walk enjoyed by the group of 23 in ideal walking conditions.
