7 June 2019

Friday 7 June 2019 we travelled to Queens County to walk the beautiful Killamuck Loop Bog walk in Abbeyleix Co Laois. This walk on minor roadways, forestry paths, old bog tracks, old railway line and peaceful wooded lanes brings you through different environments around Abbeyleix from old buildings (like the Old South School and Church of Ireland Church) to the Lord’s Walk, from woodland to bogland to old railway line and through an area managed as a wildlife habitat. It has much of historical interest to offer. It was a beautiful evening as our group of 34 enjoyed the woodland track & the boardwalk protecting the bog and it’s fabulous flora & fauna. Afterward 30 walkers headed to Benny’s Bar in Abbeyleix where we enjoyed refreshments.

Next Friday 14 June 2019 we are heading to Latteragh. This walk on forestry paths and woodland tracks brings you to viewing area where we can see Lough Derg and views towards Nenagh and Templederry. Hope you can come and join us. Did you know that walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health? Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. Unlike some other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training. Walking is the easiest way to get moving, get active and fit with friends and to have a chat & a laugh. We are leaving Slievenamon carpark 6.30 SHARP to arrive at Latteragh at 7pm. Friday evening walks are low level walks, of 2 – 3 hrs duration, mostly on forest track. If you want to get out and about in the countryside, meet new people, and make new friends, just come along. We explore paths and trails off the beaten track and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday. We offer an easy introduction to off-road walking for anybody considering taking it up. All we ask is that you come prepared with sturdy footwear, rain jacket, drink and snack. Everyone welcome, old friends and plenty of room for newcomers. The walks are very sociable and usually we end our Friday evening walk by heading for a cup of tea and sandwich. We meet every Friday evening at Slievenamon Road car park in Thurles at 6.20pm and leave at 6.30pm sharp.
